| RODNEY JERKINS PT. 2: Super producer’s hit history and history in ... - EURweb Posted: 29 Oct 2009 11:55 PM PDT
*Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Rodney Jerkins has created hits and hot tracks for the likes of Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Toni Braxton, Beyonce, and the King of Pop Michael Jackson. With a roster of megastar alliances such as this, Jerkins might have every right to be arrogant, but he lives his life quite to the contrary.
As one of the most sought after music producers around, he recently finished up a track with Mary J. Blige and Drake that is not only a hit, but the AT&T commercial soundtrack; he's currently putting the finishing touches on a new track for Janet Jackson's greatest hits compilation. He's also working with a new artist, singer Verse Simmonds, who is all the buzz with his debut hit "Buy You a Round." "I'm really excited about him. I've always had success with female artists. I only had one #1 record with a male artist and that was Michael Jackson. And then this guy comes across my desk and I'm just excited about him," Jerkins said. "He's through my imprint Interscope/Darkchild, but even if he wasn't on my imprint I would be excited about him. It's the fact that he's talented. He does everything," he said of the Virgin Islands native. "He's a musician, writer. Girls love him; guys respect him. He has every potential to be a star and we need more stars right now. The game is lacking. Great music is lacking; and so is the birth of new artists." Like his cut with Mary J. Blige and Drake, Jerkins told EUR's Lee Bailey, that it's important for musicians, songwriters, and producers look to place their music in more places than an album. "I always encourage producers and songwriters that when you write songs, you've got to look for the bigger things," he said. "It's a different day now. Most people aren't selling albums the way they used to so you have to tap into all kinds of ways to bring in wealth. So your songs will be on TV, in films, and commercials and all that. It's real important." The AT&T campaign was even extended, which worked well for Jerkins. In the meantime, he has a rap track climbing the pop charts with Academy Award winning rap trio Three 6 Mafia. "I stay busy," he said. "The Three 6 Mafia song called 'Shake My' is blowing up fast as lighting. It's going to Top 40 on the pop chart. It's the fastest song this year to come out of Sony. It's kind of cool because I've never had a rap hit. It's a blessing to cross and mess around with different genres and just have fun." For all those following in his footsteps, Jerkins said that the key to success is staying great at what you do. "People respect the fact that you're still doing it," he said. "For me, it's about still being here. I've tasted success at the highest. I've seen the lows and the highs of the game, but it's important to be here and not only being current, but being revolutionary. It's about reinventing myself and being able to do things that I want to do." Jerkins is at that comfortable place where he now gets to choose and be more focused on who and what he's working on. And with a young family – he's been married for five years, has a young son and a baby on the way – he's more focused in his personal life, too. "I'm at that place in my life where I'm happy and more content. I'm more focused on life now. Before, I was this young kid. I experienced my first hit at 19 years old. It was all about me. It's about my family now and making sure that my family is taken care of." Jerkins is also at that place where he realizes he's setting the pace and blazing trails for those producers and music makers coming behind him. "Teddy (Riley) and Quincy Jones opened up the path for me to be able to do what I do." In the goal to help make stars of tomorrow, he is starring as a judge on MTV's new talent show "Starmaker." The show, produced by Mark Goodman and P. Diddy, is a cross between "American Idol" and "The Real World." "We have all these different talent shows on TV – 'American Idol' and 'America's Got Talent.' This is not your typical talent show," he said. "It's half reality and half performance. It starts off with contestants in the house, but the cameras are always on backstage which is really unique. You get to hear what the contestants are saying about each other as they're performing, which is probably my favorite element of the show." "Starmaker" airs Sunday's at 10 on the music channel. "I think it's just another great show." For more on award-winning producer Rodney Jerkins, check his official website at www.darkchild.com. | Visit the Wrangler and you're roped in - Sacramento Bee Posted: 30 Oct 2009 12:02 AM PDT As I drive up to the Wrangler on a recent Wednesday night, the first thought to cross my mind is, "I am completely out of my depth." I park my Mazda Miata in a pitted gravel-and-mud lot among two dozen or so lifted pickup trucks caked with dirt from God-only-knows-when, and nearly roll my ankle dodging puddles as I walk to the front door. I have "city girl" written all over me. I walk up to the Elk Grove bar to order and find myself staring at the ceiling. There are thick, black lines painted all over it. After gawking for what is probably entirely too long, I realize it's a map. The Wrangler is marked on the map with a big X, and local businesses and the homes of dozens of regulars are neatly drawn all over. "If you're in here often enough and you've got a Sharpie, eventually you just draw yours," says Jeff Wadhen, whose home is not on the map. "The scale is off. My street didn't fit." Wednesday is karaoke night at the Wrangler. Just don't show up expecting to sing your rendition of Britney Spears' " Baby One More Time." This is a country bar and the karaoke selection reflects that. Staci Mungaven has been going to the Wrangler for a month now. In addition to being a karaoke environment "completely different" from those in Sacramento, the bar has also already ended up reconnecting her to friends she's not seen since high school. "Jeff was my prom date," Mungaven says of Wadhen. Owner Joe Ming, however, is looking to offer more to his customers than karaoke and nostalgia. He hosts live bands on Friday and Saturday nights, from locals such as Whiskey Dawn and Rodeo House, to bigger-name touring acts like Jason Michael Carroll, Sarah Buxton and American Idol finalist Bucky Covington. Thursday is host to Back Porch Jams with Crossman Connection, wherein patrons are invited to bring their instruments, plug in, and join the band. Ming offers this wide variety because, as he sees it, "you've got to be committed in this economy." His philosophy is that with commitment, consistency and simplicity comes desirability, and that in turn creates a successful business. Judging from the crowds, he seems to be correct. "I usually come out once or twice a week," says Mike Coats. He prefers the Wrangler on mellower nights, Wednesdays and Thursdays because, "events, they charge a cover and I'm not really down for that." Ming seems to understand this sentiment, and offers much in the way of compensation to his customers karaoke and Back Porch Jams are free, as are Fridays and Saturdays before 9:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 to 9:30 p.m., shooters are only $2. Ming recommends a Rusty Spur, the house specialty. Bud Light and Coors Light seem to be the top picks here, but the Wrangler also offers Newcastle and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Cocktails are a bit pricey for the environment I paid $7.50 for a Bombay Sapphire and tonic. This wouldn't typically stick out, but it was not strong enough for my taste. On the whole, the Wrangler is clean, safe and a genuinely fun environment. There are strictly enforced rules, and Ming isn't afraid to let patrons know there are surveillance cameras throughout the bar. This, Ming says, keeps customers feeling safe as well as keeping everyone in line. That comfortable atmosphere is what he strives to provide. "The magic of a place is when you can come in and no one acts uncool," says Ming. That magic is certainly something the Wrangler possesses. On my third trip back, I was greeted by name. On my fourth, I'm going to bring my Sharpie. THE WRANGLER BAR WHERE: 8945 Grant Line Road, Elk Grove. FORI NFORMATION: (916) 714-9911 or www.TheWranglerBar.com. | HORSE RACING: No one's eclipsing Rachel Alexandra - Daily Breeze Posted: 29 Oct 2009 11:48 PM PDT Let's get one thing straight - Rachel Alexandra is going to win Horse of the Year when the award is given out at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Jan. 18. Nothing short of Zenyatta or Summer Bird lapping the field in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 7 is going to change the inevitable, and we all know that's not going to happen. Rachel Alexandra just did too much in 2009 by winning all eight starts and beating the boys three times, including older males in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 5. How dominant was she? In their lone matchup, Rachel Alexandra beat Summer Bird by six lengths in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park. It was Summer Bird's only loss during a period when he won the Belmont, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Still, trainers Tim Ice (Summer Bird) and John Shirreffs (Zenyatta) tried to make cases this week why their horses not only should be considered for Horse of the Year but win the award if they can come out on top in a Classic that is shaping up as one of the best. "My opinion is that each sport has its championship game, and I feel if you don't compete in the championship game then you shouldn't win a championship," Ice said. "Definitely, this is the spot, the highlight of the year as far as all the great horses getting together, and I feel like this is the stage that you want to be on. "This should (determine) Horse of the Year." Shirreffs echoed Ice's sentiments. "I thought this was what the Breeders' Cup was all about," he said. "I think you certainly have somewhat of a responsibility to participate. "These are the surfaces we have in California, and all around the country there are different surfaces. This one (Santa Anita's Pro-Ride), I don't think it should be the topic of conversation other than if a horse is handling it or not." But should a horse and her fans be penalized because the owner - i.e. Jess Jackson - makes a bad decision and chooses to stay away on Breeders' Cup weekend because he doesn't like synthetic surfaces? This sport is all about - or should be about - the fans, and there is nothing in the guidelines that states a horse must run in the Breeders' Cup to be considered for Horse of the Year. There's also the added bonus of the publicity and exposure Rachel Alexandra brought to the sport. It's one thing for Madonna, Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears to grace the pages of Vogue magazine, but Rachel Alexandra? Check out the August issue. There is no question Ice and Shirreffs have ultra-talented horses. Zenyatta, in particular, is a treasure and Shirreffs already is dreading the day when she isn't around the barn to lift everyone's spirits. "She's like a stopper on a baseball team," Shirreffs said. "When you're not doing so well or you feel up against it, you bring out Zenyatta and you really feel well about it. She lifts the whole barn, everybody around her." Zenyatta should have been Horse of the Year in 2008, when she went 7-0 against a group of fillies and mares that went on to win Grade I races after being whipped by the queen of racing. She dominated defending Older Filly and Mare Eclipse winner Ginger Punch, once in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park and again in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. In most other years, Zenyatta and Summer Bird would be preparing for a showdown in the Classic that would determine Horse of the Year. But in Rachel Alexandra, we're talking about a filly who enjoyed the type of season seen very rarely in this sport. Top sprinter of the year, best 2-year-old male, No. 1 female turf horse? They're all open for discussion and likely to be decided next weekend when Santa Anita's Oak Tree meet hosts the Breeders' Cup for an unprecedented second consecutive year. But it says here Zenyatta already is the top older distaffer of 2009 and Gio Ponti will be difficult to knock off his pedestal atop the male turf division. It also says here nobody can match or surpass what Rachel Alexandra accomplished in 2009 - Breeders' Cup or no Breeders' Cup. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. | Britney getting hitched for the third time? - Newstrack India Posted: 29 Oct 2009 11:55 PM PDT
London, October 30 (ANI): Britney Spears has sparked fresh reports that she's set to tie the knot for the third time after being spotted wearing a twinkling ring on her wedding finger. The singer, who is presently dating agent-turned-boyfriend Jason Trawick, was said to be "unlucky-in-love" over a string of failed relationships.
However, the mum-of-two was recently seen with the chunky bling on her engagement finger while trotting the Hollywood streets with her beau, reports The Sun. Her mother Lynne was also said to be keeping her fingers crossed for her daughter. Lynne said: "He is the kind of man you would dream of your daughter marrying. "The kids love him, and he's stable."
