She stood to lose as much as $100million (61million) if she failed to honour the tour commitments which she had made before her meltdown.

The claim comes from best-selling author and journalist Steve Dennis, who spent six months writing and researching Britney: Inside The Dream, published by HarperCollins.

Robert Baker, dance studio director at the Millennium Dance Complex where Britney regularly trains, told Dennis: If Britney didnt go on tour she could have been hit for $100million because she was contractually obliged for another album and another tour and there was a deadline.

The whole contract was set up and a timetable was in place before Britney had her meltdown.

Had she quit and walked away then the recouped advances, penalties and accrued interest would have been near the $100million mark for someone estimated to be worth just $60million to $65million. Critics have voiced concern that Britney was taking part in a gruelling nine-month world tour at a time when she remained mentally vulnerable.

Legally, she has been under the control of her father since February because of her mental problems.

But Dennis added: I think the chief reason behind her tour was to protect Britney firstly, to return her to an identity and routine in which she felt safe and secondly to safeguard her financially.

Britney Spears has called off her romance with her longtime agent Jason Trawick, according to a new report.

The singer is said to have asked Trawick for some time for herself after the couple's relationship began to turn serious as he accompanied the pop star on her Circus world tour.

Spears was even rumored to have been engaged to Trawick earlier this month after she was photographed with a sparkling ring on her wedding finger - but the 27 year old has now taken a break from their love affair, reports OKmagazine.com.

One source tells the website, "They are taking some time apart," while another adds, "She told him she needed to get back on her own two feet before moving forward. Jason was disappointed, but he understood."

Trawick was spotted entertaining a group of female admirers during a night out in Hollywood last weekend as Spears prepared to perform three consecutive concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden.

But the insider suggests it might not be the end for the couple, adding, "Jason's always loved her, (even) since the Justin Timberlake days, so he won't let her go easily. He's giving her space - that's what she's asked for."

Britney Spears has continued her recent campaign to prove that she's now slim, definitely not mad and has a sense of humour with yet another spoof video.

This time, she's teamed up with Russell Brand in an advert to promote the 2009 Video Music Awards. The video sees Britney by her pool in LA considering Brand's amorous attentions.

The British comedian is then shown alone in a hotel room, trying to send her telepathic messages. He of course sticks to his usual chat up lines:

'Britney. This is the voice of your mind. Go to Russell's hotel room and abandon yourself. Give yourself to him, Britney. Sleep with Russell!'

Well, if it worked on Kate Moss...
