Britney Spears's new song "3" not only debuts at the number one spot of the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, but also becomes the song with the shortest title to have done so.

"3," culled from her forthcoming Greatest Hits set, "The Singles Collection," is Spears's third number one song after 1999's "…Baby One More Time" and 2008's "Womanizer."

This is just the 15th time in the history of the Billboard singles chart wherein a newly released single directly debuts at number one.

Other songs that have achieved the feat were "You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson (Sept. 2, 1995); "Fantasy," Mariah Carey (Sept. 30, 1995); "Exhale, Shoop Shoop," Whitney Houston (Nov. 25, 1995); "One Sweet Day," Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men (Dec. 2, 1995); "I'll Be Missing You," Puff Daddy & Faith Evans (June 14, 1997); "Honey," Mariah Carey (Sept. 13, 1997); "Candle in the Wind 1997/Something About the Way You Look Tonight," Elton John (Oct. 11, 1997); "My Heart Will Go On," Celine Dion (Feb. 28, 1998); "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing," Aerosmith (Sept. 5, 1998); "Doo Wop (That Thing)," Lauryn Hill (Nov. 14, 1998); "This Is the Night," Clay Aiken (June 28, 2003); "Believe," Fantasia (July 10, 2004); "Inside Your Heaven," Carrie Underwood (July 2, 2005); and "Do I Make You Proud," Taylor Hicks (July 1, 2006).

Meanwhile, after a week at the top spot, Jay Sean drops "Down" to number two. Miley Cyrus follows suit with "Party In The USA" moving down from two to three.

"Whatcha Say" by Jason Derulo retains the number four spot while Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West slides down to number five with "Run This Town."

The Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" continues to lose steam, falling to number six this week. Lady Gaga likewise sinks one level with "Paparazzi" at number seven.

Taylor Swift flounders to number eight with "You Belong With Me."

Owl City breaks into the top ten singles chart this week by placing their song "Fireflies" at number nine. Kings Of Leon descends a notch to number ten to close this week's top ten singles countdown.

Michael Buble tops the Billboard album chart this week by selling 132,00 copies of his latest CD, "Crazy Love." Barbra Streisand's "Love Is The Answer" rules the UK charts for a second straight week.

Hot 100 Top Ten: (1) "3" – Britney Spears; (2) "Down" – Jay Sean (feat. Lil Wayne); (3) "Party In The U.S.A." – Miley Cyrus; (4) "Whatcha Say" – Jason Derulo; (5) "Run This Town" – Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West; (6) "I Gotta Feeling" – Black Eyed Peas; (7) "Paparazzi" – Lady Gaga; (8) "You Belong With Me" – Taylor Swift; (9) "Fireflies" – Owl City and (10) "Use Somebody" – Kings Of Leon.

Britney shoots back to the top

October 16, 2009 Edition 1

LOS ANGELES: Oops, Britney Spears has done it again, with the US pop singer cementing her comeback with a new single, 3, rocketing to No 1 in its debut week.

Proving her popularity has not waned despite a personal and career meltdown in 2007 and 2008, 3 entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the top, making her the first artist with a debut No 1 in more than three years.

The single, from her new album The Singles Collection, due out on November 10, is the first No 1 debut since Taylor Hicks' 2006 hit, Do I Make You Proud, and the first non-American Idol song to enter the chart at No 1 in almost 11 years.

"I want to thank my fans for making 3 the No 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100," Spears, 27, said.

"I am truly blessed with the greatest fans in the world and I am so happy y'all love it because I do this all for you."

Britney Does It Again on Singles Chart - ABC News

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oops, Britney Spears has done it again, with the U.S. pop singer cementing her comeback with a new single, "3," rocketing to No. 1 in its debut week.

Proving her popularity has not waned despite a personal and career meltdown in 2007 and 2008, "3" entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the top, making her the first artist with a debut No. 1 in more than three years, Billboard said on Wednesday.

The single, from her new album, "The Singles Collection," due out on November 10, is the first No. 1 debut since Taylor Hicks' 2006 hit "Do I Make You Proud" and the first non-"American Idol" song to enter the chart at No. 1 in almost 11 years.

"I want to thank my fans for making '3' the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100," Spears, 27, said in a statement.

"I am truly blessed with the greatest fans in the world and I am so happy y'all love it because I do this all for you."

Spears has sold more than 63 million albums worldwide since her debut as a teen pop phenomenon with the single "... Baby One More Time" in 1998.

But in recent years she has made more headlines for her erratic behavior and struggles, including losing the custody of her two children.

She has staged a comeback, however, with her last two albums. "Womanizer," released in late 2008, was her first No. 1 album in almost a decade. Her current tour to promote her most recent studio album, "Circus," is her first U.S. tour since 2004.

Her new single and album are released by Sony record label Jive.

Celebrities need authenticity to rule on Twitter - Daily Journal

Posted: 16 Oct 2009 08:36 PM PDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Twitter has been kind to a motley crew of actors, TV personalities and pop stars whose fame online outstrips that of the outside world. And it's all about getting personal.

Ashton Kutcher is the most popular user with more than 3 million Twitter followers, and LeVar Burton of Star Trek fame is more popular than pop star Lady Gaga. Cellist Zoe Keating has 200,000 more followers than mega-star Justin Timberlake.

"Name recognition only takes you so far," said Jeremiah Owyang of the Altimeter Group consultants.

The social networking and blogging service that limits messages to 140 characters has a different hierarchy of who is most popular. And crowding the top are those who adopted Twitter early in its 3 1/2-year history.

Simply being a celebrity does not guarantee a following, analysts say. A loyal following, said Owyang, involves creating a dialogue with users that is personal, not self-promoting.

"If they talk about Christmas, or what they're doing this weekend," said Owyang, then a conversation is begun.

Kutcher is followed closely in popularity by Ellen DeGeneres and Britney Spears.

"Unlikely stars like LeVar Burton or MC Hammer" participate actively in Twitter and interact with users, said Rohit Bhargava, senior vice president at Ogilvy.

These celebrities seem to genuinely care about Twitter, Bhargava said, "rather than just a celebrity trying out the latest fad their assistant or PR person tells them about.

"That credibility is huge when it comes to who to follow."

There is also an age factor.

Twitter has been pretty much ignored by users under 25, according to a Nielsen study, which affects popularity.

"It could also explain why Oprah Winfrey is so popular even though she doesn't update her Twitter account that often." said Mark Evans of Sysomos, a media analytics firm.

Many celebrities benefited from joining early, and doing so with fanfare. Kutcher did that, then created enough momentum to stay on top, said Pete Cashmore who runs the blog Mashable.

If Kutcher joined Twitter today, he said, "you wouldn't hear about it."

Twitter had nearly 21 million unique visitors last month according to comScore and, according to eMarketer, has over 18 million members, though the majority does not post actively. It is the third largest social networking site in the United States, after Facebook and MySpace.
